SUMECO – Bukit Lawang Ecotourism
Conservation & Community-Based Ecotourism
Gunung Leuser National Park
Located at the gateway of the magnificent Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, Indonesia, Bukit Lawang Ecotourism was founded with a clear mission: to create ethical and conservation-based tourism experiences that directly contribute to wildlife protection and environmental awareness.
More than just a jungle tour operator, Bukit Lawang Ecotourism is deeply connected to wildlife conservation through its partnership with SUMECO (Sumatra Ecoproject), an independent grassroots conservation organization focused on animal rescue, environmental education, and biodiversity protection in Sumatra.
Conservation Through Ecotourism.
At Bukit Lawang Ecotourism, we believe tourism should do more than entertain visitors. Tourism must also help protect nature, empower local communities, and support wildlife conservation.
Since its establishment, our ecotourism activities have been designed to create positive environmental impacts while introducing travelers to the incredible biodiversity of the Gunung Leuser ecosystem — one of the world’s most important tropical rainforests and home to critically endangered species such as the Sumatran orangutan, Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, and Sunda pangolin.
Our tours focus on ethical wildlife observation, responsible jungle trekking, biodiversity exploration, birdwatching, herping, scientific ecotourism, and educational experiences that respect nature and minimize human impact on wildlife.
Supporting SUMECO’s Animal Rescue Mission.
Bukit Lawang Ecotourism proudly supports SUMECO (Sumatra Ecoproject) by sharing a significant portion of its company profits to fund wildlife rescue and conservation programs in North Sumatra and Aceh.
SUMECO was officially established in 2014 as a grassroots conservation initiative working directly on the frontlines against wildlife crime, illegal animal captivity, habitat destruction, and environmental exploitation around Gunung Leuser National Park.
Through the support generated by our ecotourism business, SUMECO has been able to conduct the following:
- Wildlife rescue operations.
- Rehabilitation and release efforts.
- Wildlife crime investigations.
- Environmental education programs.
- Conservation awareness campaigns.
- Community-based conservation initiatives.
- Ecological and biodiversity research.
Every tour booked through Bukit Lawang Ecotourism contributes directly to these ongoing conservation efforts.
Ethical Jungle Tours with Purpose.
Our philosophy is simple: tourism must help conservation, not harm it. We strongly promote ethical tourism practices by maintaining respectful distances from wildlife, discouraging animal exploitation, minimizing environmental impact, and educating visitors about the importance of protecting Sumatra’s ecosystems.
We are committed to responsible tourism standards that prioritize:
- Animal welfare
- Rainforest preservation
- Local community empowerment
- Environmental education
- Sustainable livelihoods
- Long-term conservation impact
By traveling with us, visitors become part of a broader mission to help preserve the biodiversity of Sumatra for future generations.
Working with Local Communities.
Community participation is an essential part of conservation success. Bukit Lawang Ecotourism works closely with local communities around Bukit Lawang to encourage sustainable tourism practices and environmental awareness.
Through ecotourism, we aim to create alternative livelihoods that support rainforest protection while strengthening local knowledge about conservation and biodiversity.
We believe that protecting nature and improving local livelihoods must go hand in hand.
More Than Tourism.
Bukit Lawang Ecotourism was never created just as a tourism business. It was built as part of a long-term conservation vision that connects tourism, wildlife rescue, environmental awareness, and local empowerment under one integrated mission.
Together with SUMECO, we continue learning, adapting, and improving our conservation-based ecotourism model to ensure that tourism in Bukit Lawang contributes positively to wildlife protection and ecosystem preservation.
Every visitor, every jungle trek, and every conservation activity becomes part of a collective effort to protect the remaining biodiversity of Sumatra.
