We believe that herping activities will help people to learn more about reptiles, amphibians, and other nocturnal creatures. Herping and night hikes differ from day hiking.
Our herping is considered same as night hikesm with goal is to see any animal we come across. In scientific way, exploring nocturnal species at night is a key to better understanding to the Leuser’s biodiversity.
Our herping tours refer to the activity of searching for and observing reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitat around Bukit Lawang and also possible outside Bukit Lawang if it’s requested. Sumatra is home to a diverse range of herpetofauna, especially in Gunung Leuser National Park.
Herping in Bukit Lawang often requires guide, as many species are found in remote and hard-to-reach areas. It’s essential to prioritize responsible and ethical herping practices, respecting local regulations and ensuring minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. Before herping, it’s essential to take some precautions and prepare yourself to ensure a safe and successful experience. SUMECO is a conservation organization, we always prioritize safety and respect to the animals and their habitats.
Our herping tour and night hikes (nightwalk/nocturnal hike) will begin at 7 p.m. Even if it’s raining, we’ll wait until it stops and then start walking. The tour tonight will be canceled if the rain does not stop by 10 p.m.
